EcoDiesel

Tuning an EcoDiesel using your HP Tuner MPVI

EcoDiesel tuning is performed using HP Tuners VCM Suite and an HP Tuners-compatible interface.

Before starting, download and install the latest VCM Suite Beta:

Before Starting

Depending on the model year, additional hardware or preparation may be required:

  • 2018+ trucks require an OBD/SGM bypass cable.
  • 2020+ trucks require an ECM unlock service performed by HP Tuners.

Make sure any required bypass hardware installation and/or ECM unlock has been completed before attempting to read or write the vehicle.

When communicating with the truck, the ignition must be in the ON/RUN position with the engine NOT running.

Reading the Stock File

We need a stock read from the vehicle before creating your tune.

  1. Connect your MPVI to your Windows laptop.
  2. Open VCM Editor Beta.
  3. Connect the MPVI to the truck's OBD-II port.

For 2018+ trucks, connect through the required OBD/SGM bypass cable.
  4. Turn the ignition to ON/RUN, with the engine NOT running.
  5. In VCM Editor, select Read Vehicle from the top navigation bar, or go to:

    Flash → Read Vehicle
  6. Select Gather Info.
  7. Allow VCM Editor to finish identifying the modules in the vehicle.
  8. For the ECM, select Read Entire.
  9. If you did not purchase TCM tuning, make sure the TCM is set to Do Not Read.
  10. Click Read at the bottom of the window.
  11. Allow VCM Editor to completely finish reading the ECM.

Do not disconnect the MPVI, laptop, bypass cable, or vehicle power while the read is in progress.

  1. Once the read has completed, save the file somewhere you can easily find it.

The default HP Tuners location is commonly:

Documents → HP Tuners → Logs and Tunes

  1. Email the stock read file and your MPVI Serial Number to:

    Support@SpeedFarmGarage.com

We will use the stock read from your truck to create the appropriate tuned file.

If You Receive a “Module Update” Prompt

VCM Editor may determine that the ECM software needs to be updated before it can complete the read.

If you receive a Module Update prompt:

  1. Click OK.
  2. A new window will open.
  3. Click Write.
  4. Allow HP Tuners to update the software on the ECM.

This process may take several minutes.

Do not interrupt vehicle power or disconnect the MPVI while the module update is being written.

Once the update has completed, return to the normal Read Vehicle procedure above.

You should now be able to read the ECM and send the resulting stock file to us.

Writing the Tuned File

Once we have prepared your tune, we will send the completed file to you by email.

For 2018+ trucks, make sure the required OBD/SGM bypass cable is installed before beginning.

  1. Download the tune file from the email we sent you.
  2. Save the file somewhere familiar, such as your Desktop or Documents folder.
  3. Connect your MPVI to your computer.
  4. Connect the MPVI to the truck.

For 2018+ trucks, connect through the required bypass cable.
  5. Open VCM Editor Beta.
  6. Go to:

    Help → Resync Interface

This allows the interface to synchronize its current licensing and HP Tuners credit information.

  1. Go to:

    File → Open
  2. Select the tuned file we supplied.
  3. Turn the truck ignition to ON/RUN, with the engine NOT running.
  4. Go to:

    Flash → Write Vehicle

The Write Vehicle screen will look similar to the screen used when reading the truck.

  1. Make sure the ECM is set to Write Entire.
  2. If you did not purchase TCM tuning, make sure the TCM is set to Do Not Write if it is visible.
  3. Click Write.

HP Tuners Licensing

If VCM Editor asks you to license the controller:

  1. Select License Options.
  2. If prompted for the licensing method, select License Specific for the appropriate ECM/controller rather than licensing only the tune file.

Licensing the controller allows future tune revisions for that licensed controller without purchasing another set of credits for each file.

Once licensing is complete, continue with the write.

During Programming

Once the write begins:

  • Do not disconnect the MPVI.
  • Do not disconnect the laptop.
  • Do not remove the bypass cable.
  • Do not interrupt vehicle power.
  • Do not attempt to start the engine.

Wait until VCM Editor confirms that programming has successfully completed.

When the writer reports that the process is complete:

  1. Turn the truck ignition OFF as instructed.
  2. Allow the programming process to fully finish.
  3. Disconnect the tuning equipment.

The tune is now installed.

Before Installing Aftermarket Parts

We recommend starting and testing the truck before installing any aftermarket performance parts if safe.

Check for any new warning messages, diagnostic faults, or unexpected operation.

If any new faults are present, contact us before continuing so we can provide specific assistance.

Once the truck is operating correctly with the tune installed, you may proceed with installing the aftermarket parts that were accounted for in your tune.

Important EcoDiesel Note

Leave the throttle valve plugged in.

The throttle valve is NOT tuned out on the EcoDiesel, unlike the configuration used with performance tuning on many other diesel applications.

Disconnecting it can cause faults or other issues.
